Figure 1 shows the age structure of Bloom Township’s population in 1990 and in 2000. In the past decade, the Township’s population has generally grown older. As seen in the figure, the Township had higher percentages of persons age 44 and under in 1990 than in 2000 and lower percentages of persons 45 and older. As the population continues to age, the Township will face several challenges. For example, older residents often have different housing needs and may need to be in closer proximity to health related services.



HOUSEHOLDS

Table 4 provides information on Bloom Township’s population and households over the past decade. The table shows that both population and the total number of housing units in the Township have been increasing. At the same time, the rate of increase in housing units was greater than the population growth rate. This is indicative of a decline in the Township’s average household size. In fact, household size decreased from 3.00 persons per household (pph) in 1990 to 2.83 in 2000.

This growth trend is characterized by increasing numbers of people generating more demand for housing units. The im0plications on land use are significant, as this increasing demand will continue to put development pressure on the Township.
