Scanner ] The Lithopolis Fire Department, originally formed in 1929, became the Bloom Township Fire Department in 1959. The department was all volunteer until the summer of 1990, when part time firefighters were hired to cover the daytime hours during the week. The fire department has and continues to rely on volunteers to supplement the staffing levels. January 1991, the first full time employee was hired as the fire chief. The staffing increased, to 2 firefighters plus the chief, every day from 6 am to 6 pm. In June 1991, 2 additional full time employees were added. The staffing level however stayed the same. In January 1992, a firefighter was on duty 24 hours a day, 7 days per week. There were three firefighters on duty during the day and 1 at night. Today, Bloom Township fire department has 16 full time firefighters, 14 part time firefighters and 4 volunteers. We staff the main station, 24 hours a day, in Lithopolis, with a minimum of 5 personnel per shift
