How a complaint is handled once it’s brought to our attention
If it involves zoning
Bloom Township Zoning Resolution 416 C: Whenever a violation of this Resolution occurs, or is alleged to have occurred, a person residing within 500 feet of the property in question may file a written complaint. Such complaint, stating fully the causes and basis thereof, shall be filed with the zoning inspector. The zoning inspector shall properly record such a complaint, investigate, and take such appropriate action as may be necessary and as provided by this Resolution.
Once the written complaint is received, the zoning inspector begins research and investigation. Other entities the complaint may be referred to include, but are not limited to, the health department, county engineer, sheriff’s office, and/or EPA.
Once the preliminary investigation phase is over, the zoning inspector will ask the complainant to complete an affidavit stating the known facts of the alleged violation. After that is completed, the zoning inspector will refer the complaint to the prosecutor’s office, who will then decide whether criminal charges will commence.
The zoning inspector holds no legal right to enter the property where the alleged zoning violation is occurring without a search warrant issued by the court.
If it involves fire/EMS or township roads
The complaint will be referred to the fire chief or the road department supervisor.
Revised 3/29/2023.
